say what

i was at a small gathering tonight where the film “cat on a hot tin roof” was being shown. after the movie people were discussing newman’s other films. the hustler came up. sombody asked “was that in black and white?” “uh huh” i said. “no it’s not.” somebody across the room said. i didn’t know her; she almost sounded irritated, having to stop to correct me. later, somebody cleverly remembered that the song “joanna” from the 80’s was sung by Kool and the Gang. She wasn’t completely sure, though, so I just said, “I think you’re right.” The same person, in the next room said “I think we’d better Google that one.” It was as if the sound of my answering any sort of question prompted her to intercede. I hid my feelings and decided it wasn’t worth arguing. The couple throwing the party treated me with respect, and that’s enough to consider the night a success. The steam has to come out somewhere though, I have to be right somewhere.
